From Ranchi to the National Stage: How 23-Year-Old Shruti Deshmukh is Redefining Indian Classical Music

RANCHI: At just 23 years old, Shruti Deshmukh is rapidly transforming from a local talent into one of Indian classical music’s most promising young voices. Hailing from Ranchi, Jharkhand, her journey from an eight-year-old stage performer to a nationally recognized vocalist is a testament to raw talent, versatility, and an unwavering commitment to her craft.

A Golden Beginning

Shruti’s musical roots run deep. Her journey began at the tender age of six under the guidance of her mother, Kavita, who is also a singer. By age eight, Shruti was already captivating audiences in singing competitions and live stage performances.

Her lifelong dedication recently culminated in a massive academic milestone. Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar felicitated Shruti with a gold medal for securing the first position with distinction in her Master of Music (Vocal) course at Ranchi University.

Shruti’s rise is backed by an impressive array of rigorous academic credentials from India’s most prestigious musical institutions:

* Master of Music (Vocal): First position with distinction from Ranchi University.
* Bhaskar (Master’s) Degree: Earned from the historic Prachin Kala Kendra, Chandigarh.
* Prabhakar Degree: Completed through the Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Prayagraj.
* BA (Honours) in Music: Graduated from Ranchi Women’s College.

While Indian classical music remains her foundational passion, Shruti refuses to be boxed into a single genre. She transitions effortlessly between complex classical structures and soulful renditions of thumri, bhajan, ghazal, and regional folk songs, making her a beloved fixture at cultural and religious events across Ranchi.

Conquering the National Stage

Shruti’s talent has consistently shone at competitive levels, sweeping accolades at college, university, and Inter-University Zonal Youth Festivals. Her breakthrough on the national stage came in March 2025, when she secured second position in classical vocal at the 38th Inter University National Youth Festival in New Delhi, outperforming contestants from nearly 150 universities across the country.

Her exceptional command over her voice has earned her recognition from top-tier state bodies, including the Jharkhand Kala Mandir (under the Department of Art, Culture, Sports & Youth Affairs). Selected through rigorous government screening, she has headlined major state festivals like the Rajkiya Deoghar Mahotsav, Itkhori Mahotsav, and Jagannath Mahotsav. She has also been broadcast to a wider audience on Doordarshan as a spotlighted emerging artist.

Paying it Forward

Despite her packed schedule of performances and strict training, Shruti remains grounded and community-minded. In her free time, she helps guide schoolchildren at her father’s singing training institute, ensuring that the rich tradition of Indian music is successfully passed down to the next generation of aspirants.
