Sports Competitions Organized at DSPMU on National Sports Day

Students Display Enthusiasm and Sporting Spirit in Mini Marathon, Chess and Volleyball

Ranchi, August 29, 2026: On the occasion of National Sports Day, various sports competitions were organized at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi, in an enthusiastic atmosphere. A large number of university students participated in the competitions and demonstrated their sporting talent and excellent sportsmanship. A total of 236 students registered for the event, of whom approximately 100 participated in the Mini Marathon, 50 in Chess, and the remaining participants in the Volleyball competition.

The programme began at 7:00 a.m. with a 5-kilometre Mini Marathon from the Old Building Main Block of the University. The participants completed two rounds of the Morabadi area. In the men’s category, Sujeet Munda secured first position by completing the race in 19 minutes and 41 seconds. Rahul Sahu stood second, while Shatrunj Kumar secured third position. In the women’s category, Vimla Ora secured first position in 24 minutes and 35 seconds, followed by Isha Kirketa in second and Rakhi Kumari in third. It is noteworthy that all three top-ranking participants in the women’s category were NCC cadets.

In the Chess competition, 52 students registered, of whom 34 participated in the competition. A total of 32 matches were played over eight rounds. Rohit Tiger (BCA) secured first position, Navneet Priya (Zoology) stood second, and Abhishek Kumar Yadav (BCA) secured third position.

A total of eight teams participated in the Volleyball competition. Each team comprised six players and two reserve players. In the men’s category, Team Blue delivered an impressive performance and won the championship, while Team Yellow emerged as the runner-up. In the women’s category, the Red Team emerged victorious. Sujeet, captain of Team Blue, and Pawan, captain of Team Yellow, provided effective leadership to their respective teams.

The event was attended by the University Registrar, Dr. Dhananjay Vasudeo Dwivedi; Dean of Student Welfare, Dr. Sarvottam Kumar; Dr. Ganesh Chandra Baskey; Head of the Department of Education, Dr. Reena Nand; B.Ed. Sports Head, Mr. Manish Kumar Shaw; and Sports Coordinator, Mrs. Priya. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, floral tributes were offered in his honour.

On the occasion, Dean of Student Welfare Dr. Sarvottam Kumar extended his greetings to all participants on National Sports Day and the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. He announced that efforts would be made to organize the competition on a larger scale next year and that it could be planned as a two- to three-day event instead of being limited to a single day.

Registrar Dr. Dhananjay Vasudeo Dwivedi said that the University would continue its efforts to encourage sporting talent among students and provide necessary support to athletes. He urged students to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, discipline, and the importance of sports. Thereafter, the Registrar and the Dean of Student Welfare presented prizes to the winners and runners-up of the various competitions.

The event, which commenced at 6:30 a.m., concluded at around 2:30 p.m. with the prize distribution ceremony and a group photograph. Throughout the programme, students participated enthusiastically and demonstrated discipline, active participation, and an excellent sporting spirit.
