BIT Mesra Commences 3rd International Conference on Computational Intelligence
RANCHI: The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, officially kicked off its 3rd International Conference on Computational Intelligence (ICCI) 2026 on September 10, 2026. The prestigious event brings together global researchers, academicians, and industry experts to discuss emerging trends in Geospatial Technologies, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence.
The conference is convened by Dr. Sudip Kumar Sahana and Dr. Debjani Mustafi, alongside Co-Conveners Dr. Sandip Dutta and Dr. Shamama Anwar. During the opening programme, Dr. Sahana introduced the theme and highlighted how mixing location data with machine learning can solve real-world problems.
Prof. Abhijit Mustafi, the head of the computer science department, then discussed specific mapping challenges in Jharkhand and how new government initiatives are helping experts analyze this data. Prof. Ashok Sharon, the Dean of Faculty Affairs, spoke about the school’s strong research program and explained how scientists use artificial intelligence to study protein sequences.
The conference drew valuable insights from its distinguished chief guests who looked closely at both industry use and technology ethics. Mr. Deepak Jain, the Executive Director of Digital Transformation at SAIL, focused on the practical use of artificial intelligence in daily business and long-term sustainability rather than just talking about theories. Prof. Utpal Garain from ISI Kolkata delivered an engaging keynote lecture about the dangers of misusing technology.
He introduced the audience to explainable artificial intelligence and the causal frontier, which means teaching computers to understand the actual reasons behind their decisions instead of just guessing outcomes. He strongly emphasized the need for human oversight, clear transparency, and strict accountability in all future technology development. The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks presented by Dr. Debjani Mustafi.
The academic proceedings of the first day also featured three lively technical sessions chaired by Dr. Chandrashekhar Lavania and Dr. K. Sridhar Patnaik. Researchers from national and international institutions presented a wide variety of papers focused on solving everyday problems using smart computing.
The presented research covered intelligent traffic management, vehicle detection, and large language model integration. Other presentations focused on healthcare systems, disease prediction, carbon dioxide emission analysis, smart food donation management, agricultural forecasting, and using generative models to detect financial fraud.
The successful conduct of the opening day was made possible through the dedicated efforts of faculty members Dr. Poonam Moral, Dr. Komal Naaz, Dr. Lopa Mudra Hota, Dr. Ratindranath Dutta, Dr. Sandip Ghoshal, and Dr. Aditi Panda. Research scholars as well as master’s and bachelor’s degree students actively helped organize and coordinate the events to keep everything running smoothly. The conference will continue with further technical and academic sessions covering various dimensions of computational intelligence.
