Medical Marvel at Ranchi Sadar Hospital: 1.45 Kg Spleen Removed Laparoscopically Free of Cost Under Ayushman Yojana

RANCHI: Doctors at Sadar Hospital achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing a complex, free-of-cost laparoscopic surgery to remove a massively enlarged 1.45 kg spleen from a farmer’s wife.

Sulochna Devi, a resident of Anedih (Bundu, Ranchi), had been battling severe abdominal pain, weakness, and a persistent sensation of heaviness for a long time. Her husband, Mr. Mritunjay Mahto, a small-scale farmer, took her to various medical centers for treatment. During this painful journey, several hospitals even suspected she was suffering from a severe blood disorder or cancer.

The patient eventually arrived at the Surgery Department of Sadar Hospital, Ranchi, in a highly critical state. Initial examinations revealed a massively enlarged spleen. Even more alarming was her severe anemia; her hemoglobin level had plummeted to a life-threatening 5 gm/dL.

Doctors noted that even after multiple blood transfusions, her hemoglobin would drop rapidly within just a few days.An MRI scan conducted at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) confirmed the extreme severity of the condition, measuring the spleen at an astounding 26 x 16 cm.

Following a cross-consultation with the Oncology Department, experts recommended an immediate splenectomy (spleen removal) followed by a biopsy to rule out malignancy. On June 15, 2026, the dedicated surgical team at Sadar Hospital took on the high-risk case. Instead of a traditional open surgery, they opted for an advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) technique. The intricate operation was a resounding success.

Upon removal, the giant spleen weighed 1.45 kg and measured 18 x 16 cm. Proving to be a massive financial relief for the farmer’s family, the entire expensive procedure was performed completely free of charge under the government’s Ayushman Yojana scheme.

On Tuesday, Sulochna Devi was discharged from the hospital in excellent health. Thanks to the successful intervention, her body has stopped destroying red blood cells, and her hemoglobin level has remarkably rebounded to a healthy 11.0 gm/dL.

The successful surgical team was led by Surgeon Dr. Ajit Kumar and Anesthetist Dr. Vasudha, alongside Dr. Praveen, Sister-in-Charge Nely, and OT Assistants Sandip, Santosh, Shrishti, Sarita, and Sanju.

Civil Surgeon Dr. Prabhat Kumar and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bimlesh Singh highly praised and congratulated the entire operating theater team for this stellar clinical achievement, while wishing the patient a long, happy, and healthy life ahead.
