POLYDOC doctors save knife attack victim by operating on lungs and diaphragm through laparoscopy method

Ranchi: A team of POLYDOC Hospital in the state capital saved the life of a victim of knife attack by successfully operating upon his lungs and diaphragm through laparoscopy method.

A hospital source informed this saying the knife attack was done on May 20 and the victim had sustained injuries on his left side of chest. He said that the case was critical but the doctors saved him.

“On May 20, Rahul Sharma (30) was attacked with a knife in Ramgarh Main Road. He was stabbed in the left side of the chest, which pierced the rib cage, the lungs and diaphragm (wall between stomach and chest) of the left side of the chest and reached the stomach. When he came to the hospital, air and blood leaked out of his lungs and spread inside the chest and started pressing the lungs and heart on the other side. Finally he was saved after operation through laparoscopy methed,” the sources said.

Advanced laparoscopic surgeon of the hospital Dr Ajit who was part of the team that saved the life of the victim explained the technicalities. He said it was case of tension pneumothorax, which causes difficulty in breathing to the patients and can lead to immediate death.

“It was a case of tension pneumothorax. This causes difficulty in breathing to the patient, and can also lead to immediate death. On reaching the hospital, the situation was handled by immediately inserting a tube ICD in his left side of the chest. When he was given water and food on the second day, he started vomiting repeatedly. Then a CT scan was done again which revealed that the diaphragm was torn due to which the intestine inside the stomach had entered the chest and got stuck there,” he said.

“Generally, its surgery is done by open method only in big cities by opening the stomach and chest. Due to which the patient needs to be kept on a ventilator for many days. In recent years, its surgery has been done by telescope method in foreign countries. On the same lines, our PolyDoc team planned to do the surgery. In this operation, the entire operation was done by Laparoscopy method through three small holes. During the operation, the intestine that had entered inside the chest was carefully freed and brought back to the stomach. After that, the blood clots inside the left side chest, lung membrane, and the damaged part of the lungs were removed. Thereafter, the hole in the wall between the chest and the stomach was stitched and repaired,” he added.

Dr Ajit said the method gave less pain to the patient and reduced ventilator use.

“Due to less pain in this method, the patient was taken off the ventilator within 48 hours and food and water were given to him. And today he is walking and going home safely in good condition. This is probably the first operation of its kind done with this method in Jharkhand,” he said.

Sharing the names of team members involved in the surgery, Dr Ajit said: “The team included critical care specialist Dr. Kaushal Kumar and Dr. Shakti, ICU doctors, Dr. Rajesh, Dr. Anand and Dr. Akanksha besides me and all staff of OT and ICU.”
