BAU establishes state-of-the-art Plant Breeding Molecular Laboratory to boost crop innovation

Ranchi: Birsa Agricultural University (BAU), Ranchi, has established a Plant Breeding Molecular Laboratory, a cutting-edge facility designed to advance research, innovation, and training in modern crop improvement. The new laboratory reinforces the university’s commitment to addressing global challenges related to agriculture, food security, and climate resilience.

Equipped with advanced technologies for DNA extraction, marker-assisted selection, genotyping, and molecular diagnostics, the facility will support researchers and PG students in developing improved crop varieties with higher yields, enhanced nutritional value, and increased resistance to pests, diseases, and environmental stresses.

BAU Vice Chancellor Dr SC Dubey formally inaugurated the laboratory on Thursday. “This facility marks a major milestone for our institution,” the VC said adding “By integrating traditional plant breeding with molecular science, we are creating new opportunities for innovation that will benefit farmers, industry partners, and communities.” He stressed that teachers should not hesitate in learning new things and non geneticists should also have exposure to molecular research work because teachers and scientists are lifelong learners.

The Plant Breeding Molecular Laboratory is now fully operational and has started hosting research works of PG and Ph D students. Serving as a regional hub, it aims to foster collaboration with government agencies, agricultural research institutes, and private-sector organizations to accelerate the development and deployment of climate-smart crop technologies. The laboratory will function under the guidance of Dr Manigopa Chakraborty, Chairperson, Department of Genetics & Plant Breeding.

The laboratory houses all most advanced equipments required for molecular works. These tools will significantly speed up the breeding of desirable traits such as disease and pest resistance, drought tolerance, higher yield potential, improved quality, and enhanced nutritional value.
By enabling early identification of beneficial genes and rapid analysis of plant genetic resources, the facility will reduce breeding time and costs while supporting sustainable agriculture. Ultimately, the laboratory will strengthen efforts to develop resilient crops essential for food security in a changing climate.

Dr PK Singh, BAU Director Research and Dr DK Shahi, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture were also present during the inauguration ceremony.
