BIRNI, GIRIDIH: With the onset of the rains, the problems of the people have doubled in Kendua village of Birni block. Water has accumulated at various places on the village’s main road, and deep potholes have formed. Because of this, hundreds of villagers and commuters face huge difficulties in commuting daily.
This road is located between Koderma and Kovad and is just 8 kilometers away from the block headquarters of Birni. Apart from Kendua, people from dozens of surrounding villages use this road to go to the market, school, hospital, and government offices. But due to waterlogging and the broken road, this journey is now nothing less than an ordeal.
Water and mud everywhere, movement disrupted
Due to continuous rain, 1 to 2 feet of water has accumulated on the road. Because there are potholes underneath, commuters cannot estimate the depth and bikes, cycles, and autos are all getting stuck. School children going in the morning and evening, 108 ambulances carrying patients, and farmers taking vegetables to the market are suffering the most.
Local villager Mohan Mahto said, “There is so much water on the road that even walking is difficult. Auto drivers refuse to come on this route. If we have to take a sick person, we have to carry them in our arms.”
Risk of accidents; school children are also affected
More than 200 students of Kendua Primary School come to study via this route. Many times children have fallen and got injured due to mud and water.
Dozens of buses, auto rickshaws, motorcycles, and cycles pass through this road daily. Drivers say that the tires and suspension of vehicles are getting damaged repeatedly because of the potholes. The possibility of accidents increases further at night due to darkness.
No drainage system, department silent
Villagers allege that there are no drains on both sides of the road. Due to this, rainwater collects on the road itself. The road was repaired two years ago but it has also broken up because there was no drainage system.
Social worker Rajesh Kumar, Birni Giridih, said, “This road of Kendua is only 8 km away from the block headquarters, yet its condition is the worst. The same problem occurs every year during the rains.
Demand from administration
The villagers have demanded from the district administration and the Road Construction Department that arrangements for drainage of accumulated water on the road should be made immediately, potholes should be filled with soil and gravel, and for a permanent solution, concrete drains should be built on both sides of the road.
