DSPMU organises workshop on lightning and thunder

Ranchi: A one-day workshop on sensitivity to lightning and thunder, risk reduction, and safety measures was organized today by the Department of Remote Sensing and GIS and the Department of Zoology at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU), Ranchi. The workshop aimed to address the growing threat of lightning-related incidents in Jharkhand, focusing on strategies to mitigate risks and enhance safety awareness among the local population.

The event saw the participation of over 300 attendees, including more than 20 professors from various universities and approximately 250 students and researchers. The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Abhay Krishna Singh, who highlighted the significance of the topic and Jharkhand’s vulnerability to such incidents.

Key speakers at the workshop included Dr. Manoranjan Mishra from the Department of Geography at Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Odisha; Dr. Mili from the Department of Geomatics at BIT Mesra; and Dr. Priya Namrata Topno from the Department of Disaster Management at Raksha Shakti University. These esteemed scholars elaborated on the causes of lightning and thunder and detailed Jharkhand’s sensitivity to these phenomena.

Dr. Manoranjan Mishra, in his presentation, emphasized the dos and don’ts during thunderstorm occurrences, particularly during the monsoon season. He stressed the need to raise awareness among rural communities to prevent loss of life. Dr. Mili and Dr. Priya Namrata Topno, through their insightful lectures, shed light on risk reduction strategies and the role of geomatics and disaster management in mitigating the effects of lightning. They underscored the importance of collaboration between government, academic institutions, and local communities in developing safety protocols.

The closing session was graced by the chief guest, Dr. Namita Singh, who commended the organizers’ efforts and the active participation of attendees. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ganesh Chandra Baske.

The workshop served as a significant platform for knowledge sharing and capacity building, aiming to equip participants with the necessary skills and information to address lightning-related risks in Jharkhand.
