Compliance Crisis: New EPFO Portal Update Leaves Contractors in a Digital Limbo

Ranchi: A recent update in the Employers’ Portal of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has created concern among contractor and vendor establishments. Since 11 March 2026, the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) member-wise details are reportedly not visible on the portal.

This development may create difficulties for contractors while raising bills with their principal employers. Many organisations require employee-wise Provident Fund contribution details before clearing payments. In the absence of such information, contractors may face delays in reimbursement, affecting their cash flow.

Experts also warn that the situation could lead to misuse, where some vendors may produce a single challan before multiple principal employers to claim bill payments, potentially creating disputes and confusion.

Adding to the concern, the EPFO has reportedly intensified its recovery drive for arrear dues during March 2026. Employers fear that strict recovery actions at a time of financial stress may create panic among small and medium establishments already struggling with economic pressures, and extraordinary situation arising out due to Gulf conflict and oil shortage.

Industry stakeholders are therefore urging the government to consider temporary relief and avoid punitive or coercive recovery actions during this period. They argue that business survival is essential for long-term compliance and recovery of dues. After all, as the saying goes, “a hen cannot lay eggs if it is already dead.”
