Saria (Giridih) — A growing public demand has emerged to rename the Hazaribagh Road Railway Station to Saria Railway Station, citing persistent confusion among long-distance passengers and a need for local identity. Although the station is a key stop on the Grand Chord line of the East Central Railway, its current name is increasingly viewed as misleading.
The Geographic Disconnect
The primary grievance lies in the station’s location. Situated in the Saria block of the Bagodar Assembly constituency in Giridih district, the station is approximately 70 kilometres away from the Hazaribagh district headquarters.
“Passengers, especially those from other states, often deboard here thinking they have reached Hazaribagh town,” noted a local representative. This error leads to significant loss of time and resources, as travelers must then undertake a nearly two-hour road journey to reach their actual destination.
Four Key Arguments for the Change:
Clarity for Commuters: Renaming the station would provide accurate geographical information, preventing accidental deboarding by uninformed passengers.
Local Identity: The town where the station is located is universally known as Saria. Adopting this name would officially recognize the local township.
Administrative Efficiency: Aligning the station name with its district (Giridih) would streamline postal and administrative logistics.
Regional Pride: Residents feel that “Saria Railway Station” would better reflect the dignity and heritage of the Bagodar-Saria region.
Current Status and Procedure
While the demand has gained momentum locally, the power to rename a station rests with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), following a formal recommendation from the State Government of Jharkhand. Similar proposals have been successful in the past, such as the renaming of Nagar Untari to Banshidhar Nagar.
The local community now seeks to escalate this proposal to the Ministry of Railways and state authorities to ensure that the “Hazaribagh Road” misnomer is finally corrected.
