Campus under siege: Rising stray dog attacks spark fear at BIT Mesra

RANCHI — The serene, wooded campus of the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, is currently grappling with a growing safety crisis. What began as a common sight of campus canines has escalated into a sequence of alarming attacks, leaving the academic community in a state of high alert.

In a series of distressing incidents over recent days, three students and two faculty members have fallen victim to unprovoked dog bites. The attacks have predominantly occurred near the Main Academic Building, a hub of student activity.

While the injured were rushed for immediate medical assistance and administered anti-rabies protocols, the psychological impact has been profound. A palpable sense of insecurity now looms over research scholars, staff, and students alike, particularly during the early morning and late evening hours when the campus footfall is thin.

Fear in the “Green Lung” of Ranchi

BIT Mesra, known for its sprawling greenery, has seen an unprecedented surge in the stray dog population. “It’s no longer safe to walk between the hostels and the department after sunset,” shared a worried research scholar. “The dogs have become increasingly aggressive and move in packs.”

Administration Moves for Urgent Intervention
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the BIT Mesra Administration has formally approached local municipal authorities and animal welfare bodies for immediate intervention. The institute is pushing for a multi-pronged safety strategy, including intensive drives to control the population and ensure health safety, the safe removal of identified aggressive dogs from the residential and academic zones and increased vigil by campus security during low-traffic hours.

As the administration awaits a response from the relevant authorities, the campus community remains on edge, calling for a swift resolution to restore the safe and orderly environment essential for academic excellence.
