Landmark Achievement: Sadar Hospital Doctors Remove Massive 5kg Tumor After 17 Years

RANCHI, February 20: In a historic medical feat for public healthcare in Jharkhand, the Neurosurgery Department at Sadar Hospital, Ranchi, successfully removed a massive 5-kilogram cervical tumor from a 54-year-old patient. The tumor had been growing for 17 years, severely debilitating the patient’s life.

The Case: 17 Years of Suffering

The patient had been living with the growth in his neck-back (cervico-dorsal) region for nearly two decades. The sheer size and weight of the mass made it impossible for him to sleep, sit comfortably, or even bend his head. Having been turned away by several major private hospitals due to the high surgical risk and complexity, the patient finally sought help at the government-run Sadar Hospital.

The Surgical Challenge

The marathon operation was led by Dr. Vikas Kumar and his team. The surgery was categorized as “extremely complex” due to vital nerve protection as the tumor was deeply embedded near critical spinal nerves and muscles besides hemorrhage risk as managing excessive bleeding during the excision was not easy and reconstructive needs as significant skin reconstruction as was required after the 5kg mass was extracted.

The Expert Team

The success was a collaborative effort involving multiple departments:

Surgical Lead: Dr. Vikas Kumar.

Anesthesia Team: Dr. Niraj, Dr. Vasundha, Dr. Jyotika, and Dr. Anchal.

OT Support: Sanju, Noor, Mantu, and Sarita Suresh.

Official Statements

“This surgery is a testament to the advanced medical facilities now available at our government hospital. Such complex operations prove that our doctors are capable of matching global standards.”
Dr. Bimalesh Singh, Deputy Superintendent.

“This achievement is a matter of pride for the entire district. It reassures the public that treatment for serious and complex diseases is possible and successful in government institutions.”
Dr. Prabhat Kumar, Civil Surgeon, Ranchi.

Current Status

Post-surgery, the patient is reported to be stable and recovering rapidly. Medical experts believe this case sets a new benchmark for state-level neurosurgical capabilities in Jharkhand.
