Sadar Hospital in Ranchi adds extra feather in its cap; performs surgery on a left-sided gallbladder stone

The beneficiary thanks Laparoscopic Surgery Department surgeon Dr. Ajit and his team

Ranchi: Adding an extra feather in its cap, the state-run Sadar Hospital in the heart of the state capital for the first time performed surgery on a left-sided gallbladder stone. This treatment was completely free under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana.

A hospital insider said this was a case of complete situs inversus,in which the organ (heart, gall bladder, etc.) is not in its normal position but is found on the opposite side.

“This condition occurs in one in 10,000 to 20,000 patients. (Incidence rate 1:10,000-1:20,000). Under the leadership of Laparoscopic Surgery Department surgeon Dr. Ajit, the hospital achieved another milestone on Monday,” the insider said.

Sharing information regarding the patient, an insider said the patient who benefitted is a lady from Inta Chindari under the Bero police station of Ranchi district presently residing at Morabadi.

“The female patient, B. Bara, is a resident of Inta Chindari, Ranchi, under the Beddo police station. She currently lives in Morabadi. She had been experiencing abdominal pain for the past two to three months. Upon examination, she was diagnosed with a serious condition called acute pancreatitis. Further investigation revealed multiple stones in his gall bladder, and his gall bladder was located on the left side, whereas it is normally located on the right,” the insider said.

Contacted Dr. Ajit, who is regarded as a crisis manager and known for his capacity to generate possibilities in the face of challenges; for comment, he explained the criticality of the operation and the action he took before the operation.

“Following an ECHO and CT scan, it was revealed that he had complete sciatic inversion; his heart was on the right side instead of the left. Other organs were also located on the opposite side of their normal position. This operation is somewhat difficult and unique in this case because such patients are rare, and the surgeon must perform the operation from the opposite side, which is something he is generally less accustomed to,” he said.
The patient’s husband, Mr. Joseph Oraon, who supports his family by farming, expressed his gratitude to the Sadar Hospital administration and Dr. Ajit’s team in the surgery department.

“I have never expected such operation in Sadar Hospital. Thanks to Dr Ajit and his team,” Oraon said.
