Ranchi: In a landmark initiative, the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Ranchi in collaboration with Tamai Onettom India Private Limited has introduced Japanese language as part of its course curriculum. This initiative aims to connect students with the Japanese language, culture, international education and employment opportunities. This significant step is not merely about language acquisition but is a crucial effort to prepare students to compete on the global diaspora.
The formal inauguration of this initiative took place during a cultural event titled “Japan Fest”, organised on the institute’s campus. The event served as a platform to provide students with deep insights into Japanese culture, language, cuisine, lifestyle, and prospective career pathways. The event commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the chief and distinguished guests, followed by a soulful rendition of the Ganesh Vandana by students. Additionally, students of the institute showcased the rich art and culture of Jharkhand through a performance of the traditional Jhumar dance, which was widely appreciated.
The event witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Chief Guest Ms. Kiyomi Tamai, along with special guests Mr. Yuto Nakamura, Mr. Shunta Kubo, Mr. Soma Tomita, Ms. Hena Kumari, and the Principal of IHM Ranchi, Dr. Bhupesh Kumar.
Welcoming all the guests, Dr. Bhupesh Kumar highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating, “In light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Japan “having set a goal of investment of 10 trillion yen in India over the next decade”, we foresee a surge in opportunities across various sectors. Our goal is not merely to train students in hospitality but to nurture them as global citizens.
This Japanese language course will not only elevate their career prospects but also instil in them a new perspective, confidence, and outlook.” Dr. Kumar further stated that IHM Ranchi is the first hotel management institute in the country to officially integrate the Japanese language course into its academic framework. He elaborated that this initiative will enable students to tap into the expanding tourism and hospitality sectors, offering enhanced job prospects, improved communication skills, increased confidence, personal growth, and a broader worldview.
The course is specifically designed to prepare students for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N5 level, thereby equipping them for higher education and employment opportunities with globally reputed organisations. JLPT is an internationally recognised examination that assesses the language proficiency of non-native speakers.
Programme coordinator Ms. Hena Kumari lauded the initiative, remarking, “This course will not only teach students the language but also provide them with a profound understanding of Japanese culture, etiquette, and traditions — all of which are essential for working in any international environment.” She further added that the programme aims to make students self-reliant, communicative, and globally aware.
During Japan Fest, students were taken on a virtual tour of Japan, giving them a glimpse into Japanese lifestyle, customs, and professional environments. Additionally, in an interactive Q&A session, they were informed about how learning the language could open avenues for international scholarships, admission to prestigious universities, employment in Japanese corporations, and unique opportunities within the hospitality sector.
