The issue of infanticide echoes in Jharkhand Assembly 

MLA Arup Chatterjee raises the demand for Infant Protection Act

Ranchi: Issue of infanticide and unsafe abandonment of newborns was raised in the budget session of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly on Friday. Nirsa MLA Arup Chatterjee raising the issue stressed the need for Infant Protection Act in the Assembly and demanded concrete action from the government on this subject.

In his address, Chatterjee said, “Incidents of murder and unsafe abandonment of newborns are constantly coming to the fore in Jharkhand and across the country. This is a deep social problem, to prevent this we need a strong and effective law. I request the government to take concrete steps towards bringing the Infant Protection Act.” 
He also presented the data related to infanticide and abandonment by the PaaLoNaa campaign in the House, which made it clear that this problem exists on a wide scale and constitutional initiative is necessary to solve it. 
PaaLoNaa: Campaign dedicated to protect newborns

PaaLoNaa is a social awareness campaign, which was started in the year 2015 under Ashrayani Foundation. It is working to prevent infanticide and unsafe abandonment in India through data collection, awareness, journalism, research, policy-making, training and advocacy. PaaLoNaa was the first campaign that raised the demand for bringing the Infant Protection Act in India.

PaaLoNaa campaign founder and editor, Monica Gunjan Arya expressed her gratitude to MLA Arup Chatterjee ji on this important step and said, we are grateful to MLA Arup Chatterjee ji that he raised a serious issue like infanticide and abandonment in the House and put the need for Infant Protection Act in front of the government. This is a historic step and it is the duty of all of us to take this campaign forward, so that every newborn gets the right to live. ”

She further said, “This is the result of the continuous support and togetherness of those colleagues who are the foundation of PaaLoNaa. It is a victory of everyone’s collective efforts that this issue was raised in the Jharkhand Assembly today. It is the duty of all of us to make the Infant Protection Act a reality, so that every newborn can get the right to live.”

The PaaLoNaa campaign has been demanding the Infant Protection Act for a long time and appeals for cooperation from the government, legislators, medical fraternity, judiciary and society for policy changes in this direction.
